The collision occurred when the bus was crossing the tracks and was struck by the oncoming freight train. BANGKOK, Thailand — At least eight people were killed and 20 others injured after a cargo train slammed into a passenger bus at a railway crossing in Bangkok on Sunday, authorities said.

The crash occurred when the bus was crossing the tracks and was struck by the oncoming freight train, causing severe damage and trapping several passengers inside the wreckage. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and worked to rescue survivors while transporting the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Officials said several of the injured remain in critical condition, raising concerns that the death toll could rise.

Preliminary reports indicate the bus may have entered the crossing moments before impact, though investigators have not yet determined whether malfunctioning warning signals, driver error, or other factors contributed to the collision.

Local authorities have launched an investigation into the deadly crash and are reviewing surveillance footage from the area. Railway officials are also inspecting crossing safety systems to determine if any mechanical failure occurred.

Deadly train accidents remain a concern in parts of Thailand, where transportation officials have faced growing pressure to improve railway crossing safety and strengthen enforcement measures to prevent similar tragedies.
