At least 30 passengers were injured when several coaches of a passenger train derailed near Lahore, Pakistan, on Friday evening, officials confirmed Saturday.
According to Pakistan Railways, the Islamabad Express, traveling from Lahore to Rawalpindi, went off the tracks at Kala Shah Kaku in Sheikhupura, about 30 miles (50 km) from Lahore. “At least 10 coaches of the train have been derailed in Sheikhupura, leaving about 30 passengers injured. Three of them are in critical condition,” the railways said in a statement late Friday.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene and transported the injured to a nearby hospital, while efforts continued to free passengers still trapped in the wreckage. Authorities said no fatalities had been reported so far.
The derailment occurred roughly 30 minutes after the train departed from Lahore railway station. Railways Minister Muhammad Hanif Abbasi has ordered the Railways CEO and divisional superintendent to visit the site, oversee rescue operations, and conduct a full investigation into the cause of the accident. The minister directed officials to submit an inquiry report within seven days.
