A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia’s Flores Island early Saturday, killing at least five people and damaging homes and public buildings, according to Indonesian officials and international reports. The shallow earthquake triggered panic across East Nusa Tenggara and prompted thousands of residents to move toward higher ground after a tsunami warning was issued. The warning was lifted several hours later after only limited waves were recorded. Authorities are continuing rescue operations as powerful aftershocks shake the region. 

Powerful Earthquake Rattles Indonesia’s Flores Region

A powerful earthquake struck eastern Indonesia early Saturday, sending residents fleeing from their homes and prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning along parts of the country’s coastline.

The magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the northern coast of Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara province. Indonesian authorities reported that the epicenter was roughly 68 kilometers northwest of Ende and at a relatively shallow depth, increasing the potential for severe shaking and structural damage.

At least five people were reported killed, according to the governor of East Nusa Tenggara, who said the victims were struck by collapsing rubble while they were sleeping. Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency initially reported a lower casualty figure, highlighting that the toll remained subject to change as rescue teams reached affected areas.

Buildings Damaged as Residents Rush to Safety

The earthquake caused buildings and homes to collapse in several communities. Reports from Maumere and surrounding areas showed structural damage, while hospitals evacuated patients to safer locations as strong tremors continued.

Power outages and communication disruptions complicated the emergency response. In Nagekeo, roughly 2,000 residents reportedly evacuated their homes following the earthquake and tsunami warning.

The main earthquake was followed by numerous aftershocks, including tremors measuring above magnitude 6. Residents remained on alert as emergency crews assessed damaged buildings and searched for people who may have been trapped beneath debris.

Tsunami Warning Later Lifted

Because the earthquake occurred beneath the ocean, Indonesian authorities quickly issued a tsunami warning for vulnerable coastal areas. Residents were urged to move toward higher ground as officials assessed the possibility of dangerous waves.

The warning was later lifted after relatively small tsunami waves were recorded in some locations. Reports indicated waves of less than one meter, although the initial warning prompted widespread evacuations and fear among coastal communities.

The Australian Tsunami Warning Centre also determined that the earthquake posed no tsunami threat to mainland Australia or its territories.
