The supercomputer was designed to handle the most demanding data processing and scientific computing needs.
Boston Brand Media presents the latest news... Geneva, Switzerland: On Saturday, Switzerland introduced its state-of-the-art supercomputer, Alps, one of the fastest globally, with ambitions to make the country a leader in trustworthy artificial intelligence solutions. The supercomputer was officially launched by ETH Zurich at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) in Lugano.
"Alps represents our vision of a future driven by knowledge and progress," stated Guy Parmelin, Switzerland's Economy, Education, and Research Minister, during the ceremony at the CSCS.
In June, Alps was ranked the sixth most powerful supercomputer globally, despite being only 60% complete at the time. Developed to handle immense data and scientific computing demands, Alps is designed to fully leverage artificial intelligence. ETH Zurich described it as a key initiative in positioning Switzerland as a global leader in transparent and trustworthy AI solutions. Andreas Krause, head of ETH Zurich's AI Centre, highlighted Alps' ability to train complex AI models for fields like medicine and climate research. Already, Switzerland's MeteoSwiss is utilizing Alps for more accurate weather predictions, reflecting the country's challenging topography. Economy Minister Guy Parmelin remarked that the supercomputer is paving the way for the future, putting Switzerland at the forefront of scientific research. According to CSCS deputy director Michele De Lorenzi, the operations Alps can perform in a single day would take a commercial laptop 40,000 years.
The supercomputer is housed in 33 cabinets, spanning an area of 116 square meters.
