Russian Drone Barrage Ignites Fires Across Kyiv in Overnight Assault

Falling debris from intercepted drones ignited fires in Kyiv’s Obolonskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts, local authorities reported. The incidents occurred following a wave of Russian drone attacks overnight, with Ukrainian air defenses actively working to neutralize the threats. The fragments from the downed drones landed on residential areas, sparking multiple blazes. Emergency crews were swiftly deployed to the scenes to control the fires and ensure the safety of residents. No fatalities have been reported so far.

Ukraine, A large-scale overnight drone assault launched by Russian forces struck the Ukrainian capital, damaging multiple residential buildings and igniting vehicles across the city, Ukrainian military and local officials reported Sunday.

According to Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, falling debris from drones intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses triggered fires in the capital’s Obolonskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts. Several vehicles throughout the city also caught fire from the drone wreckage, he said via social media.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that emergency medical teams were dispatched to the Sviatoshynskyi district, located west of the city center, to assist residents affected by the attack.

Witnesses from Reuters reported hearing multiple explosions overnight, believed to be from air defense systems intercepting the drones. The extent of the damage across the city was still being assessed as of Sunday morning.

The assault prompted air raid alerts in Kyiv, surrounding regions, and eastern Ukraine for roughly an hour after midnight local time (2100 GMT), as authorities scrambled to respond.

The drone strikes came amid growing uncertainty over whether Russia and Ukraine would pause hostilities during Russia’s May 8–10 celebrations commemorating the Soviet Union's victory in World War II. While Russia declared a unilateral three-day ceasefire for those dates, Ukraine proposed a broader 30-day cessation of hostilities. As of now, both sides have yet to agree on any temporary truce.

There was no immediate response from Moscow regarding the attacks. Both Russia and Ukraine continue to deny deliberately targeting civilians during the war, which began over three years ago with Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Separately, in central Ukraine’s Cherkasy region, Governor Ihor Taburets reported that a Russian drone strike on Saturday night ignited several fires. Preliminary assessments indicate no casualties, according to his post on Telegram.
