CIA Reportedly Set to Cut 1,200 Jobs Amid Internal Restructuring

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is reportedly preparing to downsize its workforce by approximately 1,200 positions, according to a Washington Post report published Friday. The planned reductions are part of a larger reshaping of the U.S. intelligence community, which is expected to see thousands of positions cut across multiple agencies.

The cuts, which will unfold over several years, are set to be achieved primarily through hiring freezes and attrition rather than mass layoffs. Lawmakers have already been briefed on the CIA’s plans, the Post noted.

While the CIA declined to confirm the specific figures, a spokesperson said Director John Ratcliffe is moving quickly to align the agency with the Trump administration’s national security agenda. “These moves are part of a holistic strategy to infuse the agency with renewed energy, provide opportunities for rising leaders to emerge, and better position CIA to deliver on its mission,” the spokesperson stated.

Earlier this year, the CIA became the first U.S. intelligence agency to participate in a voluntary redundancy program launched under President Donald Trump. The initiative is aimed at significantly reducing the size of the federal workforce in the name of efficiency and fiscal restraint.

In prior statements to Congress, Ratcliffe pledged that under his leadership, the agency would deliver "insightful, objective, all-source analysis," free from political or personal bias. He also emphasized a commitment to robust intelligence gathering, particularly human intelligence, across the globe—"no matter how dark or difficult" the terrain.

Speaking directly to CIA personnel, Ratcliffe issued a call to action: “If all of this sounds like what you signed up for, then buckle up and get ready to make a difference. If it doesn’t, then it’s time to find a new line of work.”
