A bee attack in a French town has resulted in dozens of people being injured. The unexpected swarm caused panic among residents, leading to emergency services rushing to the scene. Several individuals required medical attention due to multiple stings, and local authorities are investigating the cause of the unusual incident. The attack has raised concerns about public safety and the potential risks posed by disturbed or migrating bee colonies in populated areas.
Three individuals who were initially in critical condition following the incident in Aurillac, located in south-central France, are now recovering well.
A rare and aggressive bee attack in the town injured 24 people, with local officials confirming the event and its impact.
For about half an hour on Sunday morning, people walking nearby were stung repeatedly, according to officials from the Cantal prefecture. Emergency responders, including firefighters and paramedics, rushed to assist the injured, while police secured the area until the situation calmed.
The most seriously affected were transported to a nearby hospital for urgent care. Mayor Pierre Mathonier later informed BFM TV that the critical patients were stabilizing.
One of the victims, aged 78, suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and had to be resuscitated. The mayor suggested that the bees may have reacted violently due to interference from Asian hornets near a beehive placed on a hotel’s rooftop terrace years ago.
Following the event, the hive was removed and relocated outside the town by a beekeeper. Lt. Col. Michel Cayla, who leads the area’s fire services, expressed that he had never encountered an incident like this. He described it as particularly memorable due to the number of injured, the fear it caused, and the seriousness of some of the cases.
