Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake Strikes Near Alaska–Canada Border

A powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near the Alaska–Canada border, shaking communities across the region and prompting reports of strong ground movement. Emergency officials are assessing potential damage and checking for injuries, though no immediate major destruction has been confirmed. The quake was felt in parts of Alaska and northwestern Canada, where residents described intense shaking. Authorities are monitoring for aftershocks and advising residents to stay alert and follow safety guidance.

A powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck a remote region near the Alaska–Canada border on Saturday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake occurred roughly 230 miles (370 kilometers) northwest of Juneau, Alaska, and about 155 miles (250 kilometers) west of Whitehorse, Yukon. Officials reported no immediate injuries or damage, and no tsunami warning was issued.

In Whitehorse, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Calista MacLeod said the department received two 911 calls after the earthquake. “It definitely was felt,” MacLeod said, noting that residents quickly took to social media to describe shaking.

Alison Bird, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada, said the most affected region is sparsely populated and mountainous. “Mostly people have reported things falling off shelves and walls,” she said. “It doesn’t seem like we’ve seen anything in terms of structural damage.”

The closest Canadian community to the epicenter is Haines Junction, located about 80 miles (130 kilometers) away and home to just over 1,000 residents. On the Alaska side, the nearest community is Yakutat, roughly 56 miles (91 kilometers) from the epicenter, with a population of 662, according to USGS data.

The quake struck at a depth of approximately 6 miles (10 kilometers) and was followed by several smaller aftershocks. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
