Dubai’s RTA is expanding Emirates Road with two additional lanes to ease congestion between Dubai and Sharjah. The upgrade is designed to improve traffic flow, increase road capacity and reduce delays during busy commuting periods. Authorities expect the improvements to cut peak-hour journey times by up to 25%, offering faster and more reliable travel for thousands of daily motorists while supporting smoother connectivity across one of the UAE’s busiest inter-emirate routes.
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is preparing to open a major 5km upgrade of Emirates Road on August 30, introducing two additional lanes to improve traffic movement from Sharjah toward Wadi Al Amardi.
The expansion is expected to significantly strengthen road capacity, increasing the corridor’s ability to handle traffic from 12,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour.
For commuters using one of the UAE’s busiest inter-emirate routes, the upgrade could translate into a reduction of up to 25% in peak-hour travel times.
With the new lanes in place, Emirates Road will widen from six lanes to eight, allowing approximately 4,000 more vehicles every hour to travel through the upgraded section.
According to the RTA, the additional capacity is designed not only to ease congestion but also to create a faster, smoother and more reliable driving experience during the busiest periods of the day.
The newly expanded 5km stretch specifically serves traffic travelling from the Emirate of Sharjah toward Dubai’s Wadi Al Amardi area, a route frequently used by daily commuters.
The project is part of the RTA’s broader strategy to modernise Dubai’s transport infrastructure and introduce long-term solutions for growing traffic demand between Dubai and the Northern Emirates.
Emirates Road plays a critical role in the UAE’s transport network, functioning as a major corridor for both private motorists and commercial trucks moving between Dubai and the northern parts of the country.
The scale of its importance is reflected in daily traffic levels, with more than 240,000 vehicles travelling along Emirates Road in both directions every day.
Its strategic location provides access to several major highways, residential districts, industrial zones and logistics hubs, making the road essential to both everyday mobility and commercial activity.
RTA’s wider road-development programme is shaped by traffic data, population trends and Dubai’s continuing urban expansion, allowing the authority to anticipate future transport pressures rather than respond only after congestion develops.
The Emirates Road upgrade is therefore aimed at increasing the overall efficiency of Dubai’s road network while supporting a safe, sustainable and future-ready mobility system.
It is also expected to help accommodate the steady rise in daily journeys between Sharjah and Dubai, while preparing the corridor for further growth in travel demand over the coming years.
The latest widening project follows several other upgrades carried out along Emirates Road in recent years to improve access, connectivity and overall traffic flow.
Among these developments was the introduction of a new access route to Al Awir 1, directly connecting the area with Emirates Road and improving local travel options.
Additional traffic-management measures have also been implemented at several points along the corridor to address congestion and improve vehicle movement.
The RTA has further upgraded entry and exit points while strengthening links with Al Amardi Street and nearby development zones, helping motorists move more efficiently between communities and major roads.
Together, these projects are intended to improve the quality of daily travel, reduce unnecessary delays and strengthen Dubai’s ability to provide seamless and sustainable mobility as the emirate continues to expand.
