Diabetes on the Rise Among U.S. Kids: Could Mounjaro Be the Breakthrough? New Study Finds Promise

A new study highlights a sharp rise in childhood diabetes cases across the U.S., raising concerns among health experts. Researchers point to Mounjaro, a drug already approved for adults with type 2 diabetes, as a potential treatment option for kids. Early findings suggest it could help manage blood sugar more effectively and reduce related health risks. While promising, experts stress that larger trials are needed before Mounjaro can be widely recommended for pediatric use.

Mounjaro Shows Promise for Children With Type 2 Diabetes, Study Finds

A new study suggests that Mounjaro, a GLP-1-based drug already approved for adults, could help children as young as 10 manage type 2 diabetes by lowering blood sugar and supporting weight loss. The findings, reported by the New York Post, mark a potential breakthrough in pediatric diabetes care.

Drugmaker Eli Lilly is now seeking to expand approval for younger patients, citing the urgent need for new treatments as type 2 diabetes diagnoses climb among U.S. youth. According to the CDC, cases nearly doubled from 9 per 100,000 children in 2002 to 18 per 100,000 in 2018. If trends continue, the number of young Americans with type 2 diabetes could surge from 28,000 in 2017 to more than 220,000 by 2060.

Researchers say medications like Mounjaro may help address the crisis by reducing long-term health risks. “Type 2 diabetes in children and teens is increasing at an alarming rate, yet treatment options are limited, and this patient population remains underserved,” said Dr. Kenneth Custer, executive vice president and president of Lilly Cardiometabolic Health. He added that results from the SURPASS-PEDS trial showed significant improvements in blood sugar (A1C), body mass index, and other cardiometabolic risk factors, with a safety profile consistent with adult studies.

Experts believe early intervention could prevent serious complications later in life, making Mounjaro a potential game-changer for young patients.
