America Celebrates Mother’s Day: A Tribute to Love, Resilience, and Sacrifice

Sunday, May 11, Today, the United States is celebrating Mother's Day, a cherished national occasion that pays tribute to the extraordinary role of mothers in shaping families, communities, and the future of the country. Whether biological, adoptive, foster, or maternal figures, mothers are being honored coast-to-coast through an array of personal and public celebrations.

Originally established in 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson, Mother’s Day is now deeply ingrained in American culture as a time to express gratitude and affection. This year, families are gathering for brunches, preparing homemade gifts, writing letters, and sending flowers still one of the most popular Mother’s Day gifts. According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are expected to spend over $33 billion on Mother’s Day this year, highlighting its emotional and economic significance.

“It’s more than just a holiday it’s a moment to pause and reflect on the everyday heroism of moms everywhere,” said First Lady Jill Biden, herself a mother and educator, in a statement released Sunday morning.

Beyond consumer traditions, Mother’s Day is also a time for more personal expressions of love. Social media platforms are flooded with heartfelt tributes, old family photos, and shared memories, while churches and community centers host special events to honor the day.

In many households, the day brings emotional reflection as well—especially for those remembering mothers who are no longer with them or for those separated by distance, military service, or other circumstances. Nonprofits and support organizations have also used the occasion to spotlight the challenges faced by single mothers, working mothers, and those balancing caregiving with careers.

Despite differences in how the day is observed, the message remains universal: mothers are the backbone of American life. Their quiet strength, tireless devotion, and unwavering love make them worthy of recognition every single day but especially today.

Happy Mother’s Day, America.
