A tragic bus accident in southwestern Kenya claimed the lives of at least 21 people Friday evening when a vehicle carrying mourners from a funeral overturned and plunged into a ditch, authorities said.
The bus was traveling from the western town of Kakamega to the city of Kisumu when the driver lost control while approaching a roundabout at high speed, said Peter Maina, regional traffic enforcement officer for Nyanza Province. The crash killed 10 women, 10 men, and a 10-year-old girl.
Road accidents are frequent in Kenya and across East Africa, where narrow, poorly maintained roads riddled with potholes pose constant hazards. Police often cite speeding as a major cause of such deadly incidents.
The Kisumu crash comes just a day after another fatal accident in Naivasha, Nakuru County, where nine people were killed when a bus carrying 32 workers collided at a railway crossing, police reported.
