Novella and Metaphor Foods have formed a strategic partnership to commercialize cell-based natural preservatives, marking a significant step forward in sustainable food innovation. By leveraging Novella’s expertise in botanical ingredient development and Metaphor Foods’ advances in cellular agriculture, the collaboration aims to create cleaner, more natural alternatives to synthetic preservatives. This joint effort reflects the growing demand for healthier, eco-friendly food solutions and could potentially reshape how food is preserved in the future.
Novella Innovative Technology Ltd. and Metaphor Foods have joined forces in a strategic collaboration aimed at redefining natural food preservation.
Novella has developed a unique approach that produces pure compounds directly from plant cells, cultivated outside the plant through precision environmental control. As a leader in botanical ingredient innovation, the company uses its proprietary AuraCell technology to grow bioactive compounds, significantly reducing resource consumption by up to 99%. This method results in high-quality, consistent ingredients with no waste.
Their partnership focuses on utilizing this AuraCell technology to create natural antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds. These ingredients will be introduced as part of the Hela Natvance line, a series of natural food-protection solutions. Hela Natvance is the innovation wing of Hela APAC, which works to solve key challenges in the Asia-Pacific food industry.
Geoff Gordon, CEO of Metaphor Foods, emphasized that the alliance is a long-term investment aligned with the rising demand for clean-label food options. By integrating Novella’s cutting-edge solution into their food-protection systems, they aim to accelerate market entry. While the initial applications target meat and poultry, the broader potential spans numerous sectors including seafood, dairy, baked goods, plant-based proteins, and pet nutrition.
Itay Dana, Novella’s Chief Business Development Officer and co-founder, highlighted that the goal goes beyond introducing a new ingredient. The collaboration seeks to redefine what natural preservation means, offering clean, cost-effective alternatives for the food and nutraceutical markets. Dana noted that their platform and upcoming products are designed to address key challenges faced by modern food manufacturers.
