Kenya Aviation Workers Call Off Strike After Disrupting Flights

Kenya’s aviation workers have called off their strike after widespread disruptions affected flights and airport operations. The industrial action caused delays and inconvenience for passengers, highlighting concerns raised by aviation employees. With the strike now suspended, airlines and airports are expected to resume normal services and work through the backlog of affected flights. The development provides relief to travelers while creating an opportunity for workers, employers and authorities to address outstanding issues.

Kenya’s aviation workers have ended their two-day strike, which had brought flight operations to a standstill at Nairobi’s main airport and caused disruptions at several airports across the country.

The workers’ union reached an agreement with the Kenyan government on Tuesday, paving the way for employees to return to their duties while authorities work to address a long-running pay dispute and other workplace concerns.

The nationwide industrial action began on Sunday, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), one of East Africa’s most important aviation and transport hubs.

The union said the walkout was driven by demands for improved working conditions and the implementation of commitments made under an earlier agreement.

Union leader Moss Ndiema announced that the strike had been suspended and urged employees to begin restoring normal airport operations and services.

Workers already on duty were also instructed to prioritise clearing the backlog of flights and helping operations return to normal.

Transport Minister Davis Chirchir said the government and union had agreed on a framework for tackling the issues that triggered the industrial action.

Chirchir acknowledged that the disruption came at a significant cost, warning that the economic impact could be substantial, although the government had not yet calculated the total losses.

Before the agreement was reached, passengers at JKIA faced lengthy delays, with some forced to spend the night in or near airport check-in areas while waiting for updates.

Kenya Airways reported delays exceeding six hours, while the growing backlog of flights resulted in the cancellation of several scheduled departures.

The airline apologised to affected travellers and offered passengers the option to change or reschedule their flights without paying additional fees.

Flight-tracking platform Flightradar24 also recorded numerous flights that were delayed, cancelled or diverted during the disruption.

Among those affected was traveller Mendel Goldman, who was heading to Florida for a wedding when his flight was cancelled following repeated delays.

Goldman said he had already spent 12 hours waiting at the airport, with the earliest alternative flight not available until the following evening.

Another passenger, 22-year-old William Obino, expressed frustration over the lack of timely information, saying the uncertainty was disrupting his travel plans and itinerary.

The latest strike followed a two-day labour dispute in February, which centred on collective bargaining issues and the deployment of volunteers at the airport.

Union representatives said they proceeded with the industrial action because several of their key concerns had still not been resolved.

JKIA is among East Africa’s busiest aviation hubs, serving as a crucial link between Kenya, the wider African continent and international destinations.

Kenyan authorities reported that the airport handled around nine million passengers last year, underlining its importance to the country’s economy and regional connectivity.

However, JKIA has experienced several strikes in recent years, as aviation workers continue to push for better employment conditions and the resolution of outstanding workplace issues.
